Sunday Scaries [5.24.20]

We did it! Another week of social distancing down! And now it’s a long weekend! I may even attempt to venture outdoors, although I’m basically a moleperson at this point, so I’ll have to bring sunscreen & shades.

I think I mentioned in a previous post that I have a sourdough starter and it was finally ready to use this weekend! I made 2 loaves of sourdough, although the first loaf is not as aesthetically pleasing as the second…

the first one is shyly hiding behind its more handsome brother

It was only my second time EVER baking bread and I’m pleased with how it turned out! I did the pan of water trick the get the outside to be hearty and crusty. I used this recipe. Fun fact: King Arthur Flour is an employee-owned company and we simply have to stan! So, apparently, is Bob’s Red Mill (I was already a fan girl!), and you have to read the sweet story of Bob and his wife Charlee </3

I never thought I could like baking, but I think the trick was to make savory baked goods (I’m a savory bitch for life). I feel like there are 2 quarantine types: baking people and pickling people, and I’m proud to say that I’m both! (I’m an overachiever) I’ve been making these pickled onions, per Miel Bredouw’s recommendation, and I don’t remember what food tastes like without them.

Apart from baking, I finally got back to watching Mrs. America and it is really so, so good. Margo Martindale is a treasure, and if she doesn’t get nominated for an Emmy I will protest the Academy (or whomever does the Emmys). It does a great job of addressing how exclusionary the women’s liberation movement was. P.S. I’m so glad Phyllis Schlafly is dead! What a truly evil human being! The “subjective” portrayal of her on the show is not enough to fool me into having sympathy for one of the nation’s most heinous villains!

Anyway, here’s this week’s list!

  1. Something extremely important happened in music this week…no, I’m not talking about “Rain on Me,” though it does bang. I’m talking about this!
  2. There is, and I cannot stress this enough, a website with transcripts of every episode of Frasier.
  3. I desperately need one of these. I’m going to break my back being hunched over a computer all day.
  4. Gonna join Book of the Month because I’m a huge nerd!
  5. Speaking of which, my best friend and I are starting our own FaceTime book club and our first pick is Kindred by Octavia Butler. It’s…incredible.
  6. Also speaking of books, my friend wrote her thesis on Motherwit by Onnie Lee Logan and it’s only $4.99 on Kindle right now. I can’t wait to read it!
  7. I am SO OVER shaving. I just want every follicle on my body to die! I am truly about to spend my life savings on laser removal.
  8. I got a subscription to Causebox because I had a code, okay????
  9. I started whitening my teeth because of course I did. My dark teeth have always been a huge insecurity of mine, and it certainly doesn’t help that I’m a coffee and wine drinker. I’m using this treatment system, this pen, and this polish. Here’s hoping I don’t destroy my enamel! I’m definitely starting to see results!
  10. I’ve been doing these Instagram song challenges, and they have brought SO much joy to my life! This is my first one, my second & third which are in progress, and a spinoff playlist that I had to make because there are too many iconic songs from 1991!
  11. This pasta recipe is legendary! Or as John Legend would say, magical!
  12. This site seems very cool for minimalist jewelry.
  13. The grill pan I wanted came back in stock finally!
  14. Inkbox is my new favorite thing. I have this one on my thigh and this one on my sternum. I cannot W A I T to get another tattoo at Famous.
  15. I’m making this cinnamon roll recipe right now for my father-in-law because cinnamon rolls are one of his favorites. They also happened to be one of my favorites, but this is an act of altruism, I swear!

Until next time!

Sunday Scaries [5.3.20]

*extremely DJ Khaled voice* Another one!

enjoy this extremely styled photo…

Did I start this a week ago and then forget about it? Yes! What is time??? This week…sucked. I believe, by volume, I ingested more white wine than food. It took a month, but quarror (quar horror) finally caught up with me and I’m miserable. Going forward, I’m going to make a more concerted effort to get outside in the sunshine and take care of myself (i.e. eat a fruit, stop drinking, take more than 188 steps per day). What else can be done??

  1. ARE YOU WATCHING NORMAL PEOPLE??? I thought I’d gotten “Hide & Seek” by Imogen Heap out of my head 10 years ago but I guess not!
  2. Speaking of Imogen, I always preferred “Headlock.”
  3. I cannot recommend the book Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb enough. I mean, I’m a BIG therapy-head, but even if you’re not obsessed with psychotherapy, it’s fascinating.
  4. And on that note, I just discovered Bookshop and I am so excited about it.
  5. We finally painted my bedroom! We used the color “Rainwater” by Behr for our accent wall, and even though it’s definitely a bigger statement than I intended, I get a jolt of joy every time I look at it.
  6. In light of my bedroom makeover, I bought an air purifier, which we’ve needed for ages! We have a cat, a girl with long hair (guilty), and two adults that hate dusting (double guilty). My husband has allergies, and when we redid our bedroom walls I learned that I am severely allergic to dust, so it’s about time we got proactive!
  7. I started watching Mrs. America on Hulu and I am loving it, even though it’s about one of history’s most terrible monsters who is single-handedly responsible for the failure of the Equal Rights Amendment (which could still be a thing if the remainder of the states would ratify it…haha jk…unless?)
  8. Grocery delivery is my new favorite thing. My grocery store finally has available time slots after the initial online order boom. Even though I know the gig economy is…problematic, I feel good about giving delivery drivers work and tips during a potentially financially unstable time! Obviously, though, we’re respecting Instacart strikes and not crossing picket lines!
  9. I need this item.
  10. I love these phone cases. I got this one for my husband and this one for me, since cases are BOGO right now. I may or may not have also accessorized mine with a matching card case & AirPod case
  11. I finally got bored enough in quar that I started a sourdough starter. Wish me luck, I guess? Odd choice after I just learned I have a sensitivity to wheat but okay!

This song ends the first episode of Mrs. America and it cannot be overstated how much of a banger it it.

Until next week! Hopefully!

Sunday Kind of Love xiv

tumblr_static_1ahxvwgfplxcw4ggwo84wscog_640_v2

This week was very hard for those of us suffering from depression. Rest in the sweetest peace to Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain—advocates for women and inspiring individuals. Check on your strongest friends—some of us hide behind confidence.

If you need help, know that some of us ache for you, and know you. Please reach out to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Read this article to learn more. We love you. We want you here.

We shouldn’t have to lose our idols to open up the conversation about mental illness and suicide. I know the above gif might seem a little flippant, but we have to normalize and destigmatize talking about mental health. Talkspace is a great resource for the uninsured or those too busy to commit to regular therapy appointments.

On a more positive note, I wanted to share some of the more positive things that have been running though my mind this week:

I need every single goddamn thing on this entire page immediately.

This is the best scone recipe on the planet. People love them.

Very excited to check out the Turf Tavern while I’m in Oxford.

I’m reading The Golden Compass, The Weirdstone of Brisingramen, The Dark is Rising, and The Lord of the Rings for my Oxford class and it’s been such fun to dive back into these fantasy classics. I’ve already finished The Hobbit and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Michael and I are rewatching The Office from the beginning and holy guacamole is the finale emotional. I don’t even care if this is an unpopular opinion: American > British every damn day. When Michael showed up I *screamed*. Dwight & Angela’s wedding song is a string arrangement of “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

The new season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is out and *very Metallica voice* nothing else matters.

I’m absolutely buying this rice cooker, bringing my total of pink appliances up to…five?

I want this SO SO SO SO badly! Liz Phair is my queen.

I’m thinking of getting this kit because maybe, just MAYBE, I’ll actually start food prepping.
